2) Third-Generation Business Owner: Susan U. Endersbe Keeps the Spirit Alive (Entrepreneur's Corner)
She began as a secondary school history teacher, and then became the director of a historic site complex. But it wasn't until 1992 that she took over the reigns of the family business, R.E. Uptegraff Mfg. Co. As a third-generation business owner, Susan U. Endersbe is now President and Owner of her grandfather's (RE Uptegraff Sr.) and then her father's (RE Uptegraff, Jr.) business -- and she couldn't be happier.

3) Professional email etiquette: R U using it?
Students in Ms. Harding's eighth grade English class turn in papers riddled with common writing mistakes. However, it's not the usual suspects like "your" and "you're", or "to," "too" and "two" that are tripping them up. It's Internet shortcuts: @, :) , b4, and lol. Increasingly, casual Internet English is creeping into students' homework assignments. This problem isn't relegated to kids, though. Internet shorthand has also made its way into professional communication, especially in office email.

4) Proceed With Caution
Working for a financial institution requires a head for figures, precision and a squeaky-clean past. After applicants are interviewed and their references checked, then the fun really begins. A series of background checks, consisting of credit reports, bankruptcy filings, and criminal records are scoured before the potential employee is given the all-clear signal. Security firms do it - the United States government does it - should you even consider it?

5) Raising the Bar on Salary Caps
The leaves on the trees have barely begun changing colors and here we are discussing the holiday season already. While many companies are looking at fourth quarter projections with anticipation and promise, few are considering rewarding employees with traditional year-end bonuses. As businesses see profits decline from where they were only a year ago, employees are less likely to see a significant increase in their salaries. Theoretically it may look good on paper, but experts warn that cutting employee incentives actually hurts small businesses in the long run.

6) It's Not Personal; It's Business.
The dream of entrepreneurial success can be downright persuasive. Sometimes persuasive enough to bet it all -- personal credit cards, line of credit accounts, and often even the house. Despite the desire to make your business succeed, financing it with personal funds is never a good idea (even though many entrepreneurs start out that way).

Greater Pittsburgh NAWBO October Dinner Event: November Elections Candidates’ Soiree
October 9, 2002 (5:00 - 9:00pm)
The University Club, Pittsburgh, PA
From 5:30-6:30, enjoy a cocktail reception for all the regional candidates running for statewide and national office. Candidates and their representatives will be on hand to discuss issues and meet the women generating over $29 Billion to the regional economy. At dinner, hear from the women running for Lt. Governor – the first time a woman will have held that office – and three women are contending for the seat! As you may be well aware, while women are 54% of PA’s population, less than 13% of the elected offices in the region are held by women. We will also hear about the NAWBO PAC and how it will support our legislative efforts nation wide. After dinner, join the candidates for dessert in a networking opportunity to informally ask the questions you want to answer with a more personal and individual response. This is the only regional opportunity to personally meet the candidates working to represent you on state and national issues. Confirm your attendance by phone with Peggy Hill at 724-898-2370 or by email to NAWBO-Pittsburgh@attbi.com. The cost of the dinner for NAWBO members and members of sponsoring organizations is just $30. Non-members and guests are encouraged to attend this important event at a cost of only $40.
