Change, in any manner, is difficult for all involved. Family businesses must go through changes to tackle tough issues, be it in the family, the business, or both. Some of the changes that occur may be during succession planning, it may be the new hire of a next generation member, it may be a new in-law or child to add to the family system, it may be a sudden emergency that requires immediate attention, but an immediate solution may not be the best choice for the longevity of the family or business. Change produces uncertainty, and with uncertainty comes fear. Fear creates emotional instability, a propensity for reaction and tendency to want to get out of the discomfort of the situation. Many times family business members feel the need to make a quick decision, fix the problem, handle the challenges in a decisive manner: many of the same qualities that made these people successful in business. However, the ability to stay put, to withstand the pressure of the situation, with its length and unease, and live with the process, will produce a better outcome for all involved with a more harmonious family and successful business.
